Service Description

The tutor: The course is taught by Phil Lyons who is a BAFRA (www.bafra.org) accredited furniture restorer with twenty years experience. He is a furniture conservator/ restorer at Lyons Restoration Ltd. He is also a visiting lecturer for the MA in Furniture conservation at West Dean College in Chichester and has taught many furniture related courses. The course is ideal as an introduction to the basics of gilding, the restoration or replication of gilded objects such as frames and using gilding in creative arts. The course includes: • A mixture of lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on experience. • A choice of moldings to gild and keep. • An overview of the history of gilding and the variety of its applications. • An explanation of the tools and materials used. • Preparation of gesso and composition. • Oil and water gilding techniques. • Loose and transfer leaf gold. • Molding making and casting copies. • What can be gilded. And much more! The 5 sessions run from 10am - 4pm every other Saturday. A sandwich lunch and tea/coffee are included. They are run in a bright, dedicated studio with plenty of space. Numbers are limited to eight to ensure a good tutor to student ratio. All the necessary tools and materials will be provided but please bring an apron or clothes which you don’t mind getting dirty.
